Identifying and treating behavioral and mental health disorders is not as straightforward as treating bodily illness or injury. Mental illness symptoms manifest in cognitive, emotional, behavioral and sometimes physical ways, making it challenging to grasp the full diagnosis at a glance. Mental health assessments are valuable tools for practitioners to help fill in these gaps and provide a better-rounded picture of a patient’s status.
Individual counseling is helpful for a variety of reasons, such as increasing an individual’s self-awareness, encouraging self-exploration, identifying boundaries, enhancing communication skills and improving the use of healthy coping skills. Individual therapy aims to help a person feel better and to facilitate change in his or her life. Individual therapy can be used to treat specific mental health conditions, such as anxiety, ADHD, or depression. It can also be used to treat challenges or problems within a relationship, to help learn and implement better stress management techniques, or to understand and wade through career and life decisions. There are many great benefits to individual therapy and working one-on-one with a qualified mental health professional professional.
Couples & Family Therapy
Family and marriage dynamics can be difficult to navigate. There are so many variables to the success of each relationship in the family unit. Thankfully, years of research has helped to narrow down some key factors in helping people to thrive in relationships with their spouses, children, and others. We can use this research as a framework while also allowing intentional space for improvement in our lives
Depending on the nature of your problem, group therapy can be an ideal choice for addressing your concerns and making positive changes in your life. Groups can act as a support network and a sounding board. Other members of the group often help you come up with specific ideas for improving a difficult situation or life challenge, and hold you accountable along the way.
Regularly talking and listening to others also helps you put your own problems in perspective. Many people experience mental health difficulties, but few speak openly about them to people they don’t know well. Oftentimes, you may feel like you are the only one struggling — but you’re not. It can be a relief to hear others discuss what they’re going through, and realize you’re not alone.
Diversity is another important benefit of group therapy. People have different personalities and backgrounds, and they look at situations in different ways. By seeing how other people tackle problems and make positive changes, you can discover a whole range of strategies for facing your own concerns.
While group members are a valuable source of support, formal group therapy sessions offer benefits beyond informal self-help and support groups. Group therapy sessions are led by one or more psychologists with specialized training, who teach group members proven strategies for managing specific problems.
